What I've been using on a patch of loose soil the neighbour's cat found attractive is laundry detergent. So far so good.

Don't cats eat the vermin that would otherwise eat your plants while leaving your garden alone? Unless you're growing catnip or something.

In theory they'd eat rats but from my observations their taste seems more in lizards.

I prefer CCI 22cal shorts...Puts them to sleep right away.

Well and good for non-prohibited persons with no close neighbors, but we're not all that. My problem is squirrels. They've been pillaging the bird food, and got into the worm bin this morning. Probably need to pull out the big wooden rat traps again.

Get an air rifle & shoot them from inside.

Not workable, as the distance from the sliding glass door is 6 to 10 feet. Did ping one again with the airsoft, but it's hard to get them before they retreat, and it seems an insufficient disincentive. Rat traps are my next move. Then poison (?) or electrocution.

A high frequency generator & metal mesh fabric could be a good basis for a fun trap :)

@Sector2...just a point of interest...first off, many people ask what the difference is between a rat and a squirrel, other than the bushy tail, a rat can reproduce 4-5 times per year whereas a squirrel will most often go once, in favorable conditions they'll reproduce twice...but habit wise they're almost similar except rats can't monkey a tree like a squirrel...as for intelligence, fucking rats are tops and have a good memory for negative encounters such as traps, if they get out of a trap there won't be a second chance until the appearance of the trap and the ambiance are changed...but make no mistake about it both are highly destructive...they pull the insulation out of walls, they'll ruin a garage or attic and all the contents with it, they destroy wiring, plug up air intakes with their nesting, AND, if they happen to chew into a box of wooden matches you've got a fire...also red squirrels are carnivorous as well as peanut eaters and what I've found is that when they get tame and comfortable around humans they bite and hard and if they draw blood it has to be killed and checked for rabies...I had one bastard clamp down on me last year and one of it's fucking teeth pierced my leather lineman glove but never broke skin but it was like getting my finger pinched in the slide of an ACP...they are destructive and I've got them on my "kill" list along with coons, rats and pigeons.
