I lived in Parker, Arizona years ago. There's a road that goes along the Colorado River and one year during the monsoon season, I saw a VW beetle get swept away into the river. Nobody else dared to cross that gully until the rain slowed down.

Just like in the commercials, that VW floated and remained upright. It washed down the river quite a ways when the sheriff department boat caught up with it, over a mile downstream and towed it back to the river's edge. That car and driver got pulled out unharmed and they made the newspapers.

Strange way to become a local celebrity.

VW added vents in the 70's. Prior to that they are incredibly air tight. Its very difficult to even close doors because the air does not displace.

I know first hand the VW bugs float. Yes, I had that dad.

He also rolled my ass down a hill in three inner tubes lashed together because it would be "fun". Jokes on him, I rolled his ass into the retirement home the same way aaaaaahhahahahahahahaha!
