If the opposite of pros are cons, then the opposite of progress is...

We all want progress, but if you're on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road; in that case, the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive.

C. S. Lewis

Regression.

Egress can also be used here.

An egress could be used to 'regress', as in backing out the way you came in. In common parlance it more has the sense of 'continuing on to the exit', or moving forward and out once you're finished with whatever. What it mainly lacks is the sense of "undoing", or reverting to a previous state.

Interesting, I love this, what are your thoughts on the word relinquish?

Can one give up a planned course, a set of actions, or habits to return to a previous state or past stage?

The English Language has so many different words to explain the same thing. It's pretty complex and interesting. What a shame most try to communicate with such a limited capacity.

One can relinquish a planned course, set of actions, and etcetera, but reluctantly, or under force. I'm not remembering the etymology of relinquish, but there's regret, or a desire to have continued holding onto whatever was 'given up'.

In a sense you revert to a previous state, but it depends on what you relinquished. A failing business, the railing of a high bridge, a marriage, or a sail foam to a nigger, all tend to leave you in place perceived as worse. That's why you were reluctant in the first place. But sometimes we hold onto stuff too long that's dragging us down, so relinquishing can be a net benefit too.

NOMIC is a 'language & rule' game you might find complex and interesting.

"Nomic is a game in which changing the rules is a move." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nomic

"Sail foam to a nigger"...:D

Exploring words: Yes, we can back-track by giving up on our petty claims, our insistent ego, our bratlike impulses, our obtained cargo, and our bad decisions.

Relinquishing all things willingingly may well change it to sacrifice which also can be reluctant or willing. Why are words so freagin, interesting to play with...

That game sounds pretty cool, seems like a hard game! I will have to look into it.

How did you come across this game and why do you love words so much?

Goonies. They are in a wishing well (at the bottom in a cave system).
They were taking the coins, and a female objects:
"wait, this is our wishing well, these are people's wishes, we cant take them"

Our boy responds:
"See this? This was my wish. It didn't come true and I'm taking it back, I'm taking them all back"

It resonated and my mind works oddly. Taking back the coin, turning back to find the right road.
Giving up and starting over... because it didn't work.

I'm sure everything else about the film is horribly jewish but that part was pretty neato at the time.

Thanks, I need to watch that for that one scene, it's deep and meaningful. Not sure why I haven't watched it yet, thanks for the explanation!
