Ever been to the best beach in the world? Florida's Siesta Key, near Sarasota

submitted by Panic to TIL 2 monthsFeb 7, 2024 09:58:30 ago (+8/-1)     (TIL)

The only beach in the world made of 99% quartz crystal sand. Nobody knows why quartz cryatal sand even exists at a beach where there is no native quartz to be found.

Very white sand that never gets hard and never gets hot to the touch in summer. Sandy beaches always get too hot in summer sun, but not this quartz crystal sand. And it squeeks when you walk on it.

Just found out that a dear friend lives there, so in the spring, I'm gonna visit this wonderful place. Oh, and here is the beach live cam. Be sure to watch the live cam again on Sunday evening and see the unique weekly gathering.

A lot of east coast beaches have sand that squeaks and lights up at night.
That's why it's the 'right' coast and/or the Beast Coast

Many beaches along Florida gulf coast are snow-white quartz. If you walk on the sand at night your footsteps light up!

piezoelectricity?

[ - ] oyveyo 2 points 2 monthsFeb 7, 2024 13:43:29 ago (+2/-0)

Not sure if piezo or biolumenescent algea or a combination of both... i'll stick with "magic"!

[ - ] PeckerwoodPerry 1 point 2 monthsFeb 7, 2024 13:46:56 ago (+1/-0)

Forgot about the algae. Comb jellyfish are bioluminescent too, and they can be found in abundance in the Indian river lagoon. Cool creatures, and they don't sting either. I've seen them as big as 3" across. The nature here is magical.

Florida has a bunch of stingy jellyfish too.

piezoelectricity?

yes, exactly.

Yes. Destin-Fort Walton beaches are quartz crystal 'sugar sand'. Not as pure but mighty fine beaches.

[ - ] 2plus2equals5 2 points 2 monthsFeb 7, 2024 12:04:23 ago (+2/-0)

It's crowded, blinding in the morning sun, have to walk a half mile to get to water, the fine sand sticks to everything. I'd rather sand drywall. Go to Turtle Beach and get a foot massage.

[ - ] Panic [op] 1 point 2 monthsFeb 7, 2024 15:32:04 ago (+1/-0)

I'd rather sand drywall.

Drywall is made of gypsum. The truly whitest sand in America at White Sands National Park, sand made of pure gypsum. I've been there and it is awesome.

Lido is my spot. Or the real hidden gem… Beer Can Island.

Lol
You fucking idiots.
Siesta key is as full of niggers as Clearwater and Holmes Beach.
The sugar white sand is predominate from anclote to boca Grande.

As for beaches with minimal Jive Turkeys, there are a few. But they are for me and @Conn77 and y’all can fuck off, we’re full.

[ - ] Imsickofmakingusernames 1 point 2 monthsFeb 8, 2024 08:23:15 ago (+1/-0)

As a resident I can tell you that the nigger % is actually very low. Yeah, there are some niggers in Bradenton but they basically stay there. Sota is too expensive. I’d say it’s pretty close to paradise but fuck you, we’re full.

As a kid I used to swim in the ocean all the time, then when I got older I started fishing the Gulf. I don't go in the ocean anymore.

how many gators per football field?

[ - ] PeckerwoodPerry 1 point 2 monthsFeb 7, 2024 13:42:17 ago (+1/-0)

No gators in salt water. I've heard about big saltwater crocodiles though off that coast. My uncle claimed to have seen a 20 footer off the coast of Sebastian.

Y'all mother fuckers that are afraid of gators really entertain me. More people die every year from bee stings.

Go swim in the northern Territory

No really that's an official dare

[ - ] Steelerfish -1 points 2 monthsFeb 7, 2024 21:59:15 ago (+0/-1)

Horseshit.
There are huge saltwater crocs that are becoming more and more aggressive due to the impacts of man made climate change,
They insatiably thirst for pasty white soy-filled northern flesh.
I hear they don’t exist in Georgia or Louisiana.

[ - ] i_scream_trucks 1 point 2 monthsFeb 8, 2024 00:05:35 ago (+1/-0)

Problem with that statement is man made climate change isn't real

The sand itself seems fine, but it's located in Florida and the waves are terrible. You normally do want the sand to get hard near the water for ease of walking.

Looks good for winter beaching or swimming in particular.

"the racial composition of Siesta Key was: White: 92.2% Two or more races: 4.57%"

Btw, they say the quartz comes from the Appalachian mountains.

it's located in Florida and the waves are terrible.

It's on the Gulf of Mexico side of Florida and sadly, there are no real waves there. I've lived on Florida's west coast for decades and always found the waves disappointing. The fun waves are on the Atlantic Ocean beaches. I miss playing in the waves.

Or there's Mavericks a bit south of San Francisco.. Aside from the waves, the other biggest difference is the deep ocean just offshore make the water temp around 53F. Hence, wetsuits invented here.

Btw, they say the quartz comes from the Appalachian mountains.

So say the Harvard experts, but they are wrong. There is no way for quartz sand to go from Appalachia to the west coat of Florida. There are no rivers running that way at all, and the rivers flowing out of Appalachia are brown with muddy silt. How clean quartz sand got here is a total mystery.

[ - ] Sector2 2 points 2 monthsFeb 7, 2024 15:37:30 ago (+2/-0)

"This water carried the quartz particles from the rock that forms the Appalachian Mountains and deposited them in the Gulf of Mexico, just 125 miles to the east of what is now Destin.

Here in California, sand migrates south until it hits the local trench that starts just offshore. If Florida has no deep (2.5 mile) trenches to drain the sand away, it likely migrates right down to the southern tip.

Been there, done that.
No T shirt.

I've been to a place on a beach where little sea shells get washed up and eventually get pulverized into white squeaky sand. At night it reflected light like frost.

[ - ] PeckerwoodPerry 1 point 2 monthsFeb 7, 2024 10:16:16 ago (+1/-0)

Driven past many times, never spent anytime there. I'll have to check it out. Always looking for new weekend getaway spots.

Sunday evenings are fun. For decades, there are 'drum circles' which are pretty popular. See here:

Drum circles are for hippies

[ - ] bosunmoon 1 point 2 monthsFeb 7, 2024 16:46:31 ago (+1/-0)

That is truly straight out of my nightmares. I want none of that.

If you've got a drum circle, then it's a sure bet that you also have 'giggling stoners' in your attic.

Next thing you know, you're ass deep in college 'know-it-all' hippies.

Yes I have

And it's not in the US
