What I found most interesting was that a whole pack of random urban niglets who'd never been off of pavement in their lives, required no training whatsoever in how to pick cotton.

They were just turned loose in a field with a bag and told to pick, and they just did it, like it was instinctive.

My mom and her 10 siblings all picked the cotton. Also helped pick the beans, watermelons, and corn. What she hated about the cotton was the spiders that lived in it would run up your arm when you went to pick it.

They didn't have any nigs, but that whole region of Georgia is infested.

My grandfather was a broke-ass Oakie during the Great Depression.

The whole family picked everything there was to pick.

He was so brown from working out in the sun that the Army once put him on the back of a truck with all the spics they had rounded up. I want to say it was him that told me in those days, they'd drive them over the border 50 miles or so and let them off in the middle of nowhere. He yelled at them that he wasn't mexican and they put him back.

Anyway, he told me that of all the crops they picked, cotton was probably the worst. He said the cotton had sharp thorn-like husks that would fuck your hand up if you weren't careful.

I've only picked a cotton boll one time, driving through South Carolina on a back road and happened upon a huge cotton field.

I went on a similar field trip in second or third grade. Old victorian textile mill with a small cotton farm next to it. It wasn't August, though; I think it was October. Two niglets were in that class, too, and no one gave a shit. We were all just grateful to be out of the damned classroom.

Notice what he said near the end...he said "I didn't even understand what was wrong with that shit until etc"...and a bit earlier he stated that his mother was pissed at the teacher for bringing the kids to a cotton field in the middle of the summer (because of the heat), from what I gathered she wasn't pissed at the racist allusions of a cotton field but rather the fact that the kids were wide open to the heat.
