They probably operate them high enough to be out of shotgun range. I can’t explain why that isn’t the case in this video. All you need is to shoot a weight with some fishing line attached. It would wad that drone up real quick.
Would require some testing, but I imagine they're not too effective. A drone can lose one or two rotors and be fine. Minor damage to a rotor is no big deal. The main body is easy to shield. Some thin sheet metal should stop bird shot.
And then there is evasive maneuvers. Drones can be very agile.
