I was stationed on the USCG base on Governors Island in the 80's. About 500 yards from the southern tip of Manhattan and about the same distance from Brooklyn. All you heard all night was sirens.

I came across a homeless guy once with a sign that literally said “hungry need food”. I happened to be leaving a wedding so I had some food. Nicely boxed up and everything. I said hey man you want this? He looked at me like he wanted to punch me. Wanted drug money. It’s a shame when those types ruin it for the ones who are actually down on their luck.
