I agree, It's pretty amazing that they've been married for 44 years.That's pretty uncommon for celebrities. There are a lot folks here on this site that are younger than 44.

My parents were married 44 years when my father died. It was a month between him telling us he had cancer and dying. I'm fuckin positive that would be easier to deal with than watching your spouse slowly degrade. I watched my great grandmother slowly decay from Alzheimer's. She'd be up wandering the house at 3am saying she just wanted to go home. She'd lived there 17 years at that point. Fuck that. If I ever get to that point I'm eating a bullet in a moment of lucidity.

Mine were married 65 years when my mom died of/with Alzheimer's. She did recognize me at the end in the last phone call, while I was being prepped for heart surgery. She was dead when I woke up. :(

She was in a home by that point. We had to get her somewhere after my dad found her in her nightgown outside in winter. Somehow she had also turned the gas stove on but none of the igniters.

I took care of my Grandfather for about 6 months when he was like that. It sucks.

I actually thought about including Carson initially, but I thought, looking at the years his career spanned, he was more from the older generation of talk show hosts Jack Paar, Ed Sullivan, et al.
