It's the dual income that screws you. If she stayed home you could claim her as a dependent. Most people need the dual income nowadays due to bidenflation and/or a really high standard of living, so one spouse quitting isn't an option.

rules constantly change. i can remember during the early to mid 90's i could claim one for being single, one for head of household, and one for being single and having only one job. debt based money is a constant cost of living/operating increase. meanwhile there are illegals and guest workers assigned a tax identification number getting credit for however many they want to claim for child tax credit. no one checks. welfare won't even check if the fraud is below $20,000 per year.
