there are promising modifications which may reduce NOx emissions to the compliance level

so not even the last generation was compliant

they could probably figure it out today but it's gonna compete with 4/6-cylinder engines that have been cost-optimized over decades

Oh my guess is that it'll stay in the scrap heap of automotive innovation long gone... Maybe some budding Elon Musk type will tinker with it, and produce some spec cars, but economies of scale will ensure that these will not likely ever know mass production.
