Always call your insurance company and add the "unowned vehicle" endorsement before renting a car. Rental companies will try to bilk you for an extra grand of fees on top of the body shop repairs

Your typical Auto insurance will pay a body shop to repair a damaged rental car, however without the "unowned vehicle" endorsement added to your policy they will not pay for loss of use, diminished value, administrative fees, etc.
These can add up to over a grand very easily and the rental car company will come after you for the money

It depends, but generally if fatalities are involved, insurance won't touch it, and the fine always goes to the driver and not the carrier, and usually so does the lawsuit if the driver is at fault. If the driver is not at fault it usually goes against rhe carrier. In any case, the defendants almost always lose, even when trucker is of no fault. Major carriers can take the hit because they self-insure, but if you're an O/O, it provides a good reason to register your business as an S-Corporation and NOT an LLC; an LLC will take you down with it, with an S-Corp you can bankrupt your company with with no dirt on you personally.

One major case over the last few years: Beaner family on I-20 in TX lost control of their car, went across the median and hit a Werner truck head on. Three died including one of the brats. Surviving brat became a quadripelegic. Remaining family won a $22m lawsuit against the driver, even though he did nothing wrong, was driving under the speed limit, and had dashcam. The court found the driver at fault because the FMCSA regulations stated he should have been going 15mph in those conditions (absurd, and he wasn't the one who lost control). I missed the details, but at some point Werner took it up to defend the driver and was going to pay a $100m settlement. Final settlement was $150m.

Edit: Tidied up a bit and want to tell you why this is- fucking jewish rats. They over-regulated the industry. It has gotten to the point that every single trucker is in violation of something at all times, which makes 99.9% of lawsuits against truck drivers an easy win. The scumsucking kike lawyers know exactly where to dig in the regulations and profit. There are so many fucking law firms that specialize in (and only take on) truck crash lawsuits. It's its own industry, and it's fucking disgusting.

Somehow this reply never hit my inbox. Dunno, honestly. There are so many that it's almost contextual which story gets told. In terms of about shitting myself, I suppose the most noteworthy were the time I tried avoiding a tornado and wound up right next to it, and it lifted my trailer off the ground, and the time I nearly ate shit during that 2021 Texas ice storm- lost traction at 50mph, jacknifed, let the truck drift a lane over rather than fight it- while staring nearly perpendincular at the median, regained traction, gunned it, and snapped it straight.

There was also that time in GA southbound on I-75 just south of Chatt. It was about 0430 and I was passing turtle trucks battling each other in the right and center lanes. I took the left and gunned it to ~85 to pass the furball. Waaay behind me I saw an SUV rapidly approaching but thought nothing of it. It gained on me soon after passing all the trucks and moving all the way right. I flicked my cigarette out and it exploded on his windshield. It was a sheriff. Left lane is prohibited for trucks through there, I was going 15 over, and I nailed him head on with a cig. He pulled up, stared at me, wagged his finger, and took off. He was probably going home.

That last one cracked me up. It reminds me of the first bike I rebuilt. It was a 1986 Kawasaki VN750, which hadn’t ran for over 20 years. I finally got it up and running to the point where I wanted to take it for a test drive with the wife. The tires were dry rotted after almost 34 years, the tag on the license plate was 30 years old, the turn signals were just flopping in the wind, and it was still covered in cow shit. So I pulled onto the main road, because I was just going to go around the block. A cop popped out of nowhere, and his bumper was damn near on my back tire. So I pulled over immediately, knowing how this was going to play out. The cop pulled in behind me and sat there for a solid 5 minutes, never turning his lights on. Eventually he pulled up next to me, just shook his head in disgust and drove off. Apparently I wasn’t worth the mountain of paperwork either
