Its intentional. A few years ago they paid for studies to figure out how to make them swarm.. Now we're getting swarm events outside of normal probability ranges.

I don't know, there are all age ranges on this site. It is possible that you could have been born around the last 17 year cycle, and would have been too young to really remember. I'm just glad they're not like flesh-eating piranhas, and that they can't kill you.

A few days after they emerge and molt, the males will start buzzing in an effort to find a mate, a slow-building crescendo of noise that in a chorus can be louder than a plane. Yahoo.

I have long supposed the cicada's sound is actually an audio frequency radio wave.

It is for sure interesting the means in which they make their noise. If you haven't been through one of these 13 or 17 year cycles, it's quite annoying.
