Anyone looking for a phone with an SD card slot and headphone jack, the Samsung A15 is the phone to get and it's $200 brand new

I'd be dead in the water without my 1TB microSD cards and being able to swap them out of my phone.

Isn't the A15 the one with fragile screens that keep breaking?

I have the A54 5G. It has a slot but no headphone jack. But the dumb dongle thing for the headphone jack was only $10. Very happy with the phone.

I had the A04 for the same price. Not a bad phone. Picked up a second hand z fold 3 for christmas so using that now.

The galaxy S20 has an SD card.

Android budget phones are better and have more functionality than anything flagship, at a fraction of the price. It's an idiot tax.

I tell everyone don't buy any new phone. Get refurbs or second hand phones, zero profit goes to the OEM and suddenly magically their brand new phones are no longer 'worth' the $2500 (they're only priced at that because dickheads will pay it) they want for a phone. Don't even buy older or non flagship models new, always second hand.

New Motorola's are good because they let you unlock the bootloader which allows you to root it. I'll take my rooted $250 Motorola over the best iphone or flagship android unrooted. It has an SD slot, head phone jack. Only if it had a removable battery would it be perfect.

That's what I do. Motos are reasonable

[ - ] Kozel 0 points 3 monthsJan 18, 2024 23:02:34 ago (+0/-0)

What are you doing with root that you would sacrifice security for it?

I use GrapheneOS no root, btw.

[ - ] Niggly_Puff 0 points 3 monthsJan 18, 2024 23:42:54 ago (+0/-0)

It's only a security risk if you are a moron. It's doesn't automatically give every app root access. You have control over it.

[ - ] Kozel 0 points 3 monthsJan 19, 2024 00:12:57 ago (+0/-0)

The security risk comes from booting to recovery and overriding the partition holding the unlock code then booting directly to OS without lock code.

[ - ] Niggly_Puff 0 points 3 monthsJan 19, 2024 00:26:20 ago (+0/-0)

How is that a security risk if you are competent with computers?

[ - ] Kozel 0 points 3 monthsJan 19, 2024 00:33:47 ago (+0/-0)

It doesn't matter if YOU'RE competent with computers. Your phone gets taken away and your data is compromised. No need for hardware, de-compilers, or delidding. A 100iq with access to a search engine, USB cable, and 5 minutes of time and your unlock is bypassed.

[ - ] Niggly_Puff 0 points 3 monthsJan 19, 2024 00:50:45 ago (+0/-0)

I've always assumed the data on my phone is not safe if I am not in physical possession of it, rooted or not. That's why I don't store important shit on it. I use it as a communication device and a web browser only. Anything serious or important is done on a proper computer.

[ - ] Kozel 0 points 3 monthsJan 19, 2024 01:13:29 ago (+0/-0)

Its not just data. Its an open attack vector, not only at yourself but also at your contacts. And you are correct for assuming that is the case on a normie device and especially on a rooted device. Because as I explained, on a rooted device all that's needed is a USB cable. On a non-rooted device, they have to do something like this:

https://invidious.flokinet.to/watch?v=8uEqk2p9MZU

Watch that to understand this point:

On GrapheneOS, there is a setting to auto-reboot your device after X hours of inactivity. When the device is rebooted the RAM is wiped. So they can't get your access code from the RAM even if they delid your cpu and disassemble your ram.

Hope you're finding this discussion interesting. Lets talk about your computer. Statistically speaking, its probably Windblows and Backdoorlocker. Am I right?

Oh and to answer your question: Ad blocking and firewall mostly. I never see an ad on my phone, and google and other apps are blocked from having internet access.

GrapheneOS? What phone are you using which you can install this on without root?

[ - ] Kozel 0 points 3 monthsJan 19, 2024 00:20:32 ago (+0/-0)

Firewall: Since Android 11 or 12 there's a built-in firewall if you go to app settings. AFWall+ is nice and I have a license for it but what's the point if that's built in? Just tap-hold an app and then go to info and Mobile Data & WiFi. You can disable network access there for wifi, mobile, and backgroun ddata.

Ad Blocking: You can install Fennec, Mull, or regular old firefox and install ublock on it. Now you don't have ads. You can install Nextpipe Sponsorblock and not have any youtube ads and skip sponsor segments. You can install Rethink DNS+ Firewall from Fdroid and not have ads system wide.

As far as installing a rom without root. You don't need root to flash a rom. You enable dev options and oem unlocking, then unlock bootloader and run fastboot commands. Then relock bootloader and boot to OS. If you're doing some kingroot bullshit to install a rom you've just installed a backdoor with it. I've flashed dozens of phones and have never used root to do it. If you're using root to flash roms you are doing it wrong.

I'm on 11 and don't have that feature. Does it allow you to block all of google's crap? I doubt that.

I have no ads system-wide, including apps. This is better than a specific browser with plugins, or various apps.

You have to route all your traffic through their VPN.

Probably started on 12 then. Why the hell are you running outdated shit? I've been on 14 for like a year.

Does it allow to block google's shit? Yeah if you use Graphene and have it sandboxed https://files.catbox.moe/d6uzuq.png Or if you run microg. But that's full of security holes.

What shitty apps are you using that have ads? I don't have any apps installed that show ads. Most of the apps are blocked from connecting to the internet anyway so they couldn't show ads even if they wanted to. And if I had an app that showed ads, I would uninstall it, and install an open source alternative from fdroid.

You have to route all your traffic through their VPN.

It emulates a VPN at localhost. You choose which blocklists to implement, or which apps to block. You also have a choice whether to use their DNS servers or not.

I have been burned by updates too many times, I only do so if there is a feature I want or I have no other choice. My phone has been harassing me to update to 12.

What does a phone require in order to be able to install a different OS? I've installed Lineage before on an old phone and it required rooting it and doing all sorts of things.

I don't know because I don't see ads, lol. Being able to disable internet natively in android is nice. Long overdue and definitely makes non-root more tolerable. I feel naked without having that control.

Interesting.

LineageOS does not require root at any point. Most likely you are misremembering or mixing up terminology. The install is identical for all phones: enable dev mode, enable oem unlocking, reboot to bootloader, unlock bootloader, flash lineageos through fastboot, and after this point you can optionally root the device. The problem here is that the bootloader stays unlocked which means anyone can run fastboot commands.

Based on what you've told me, you're running a rooted stock OS, and stock OS is always shit. At least flash a modern custom rom on it. Or better yet, go on ebay, buy a pixel 6a for $120, and flash it with graphene. I doubt you will regret it.
