That's right, to operate these smaller drones, they are generally within 30-50km of the operational area.

A Russian explained to me that the battles follow a similar pattern- both sides fly tons of drones into the area, most of them are unarmed and simply observing (which is an incredible advantage on a battlefield), some are armed. The infantry and tanks start shooting at each other, and they start dropping bombs on each other. While this is happening, both sides are trying to track the signals of the other side's drones. If they can get a fix on this, they will be able to identify the structure or trench or wherever the operators are posted up. Once drone headquarters are located, they'll call in a precise artillery or airstrike to bust the drone operation structure.

As soon as one side gains drone superiority, they begin crushing the other side. It used to be about fighting for air superiority, now it's drone superiority. Once you've taken out your enemy's drones in the area, you have all the information they do not.

I never would've imagined this kind of warfare, but it's brilliant in how practical it is. These drones are cheap as shit, and one fully loaded with grenades is probably worth less than $5,000- if that drone kills or maims just one man, who has had tens of thousands invested in his training, gear, etc., it's a huge win. The Ukrainians need this since they are fighting a superior force- they have to behave more like guerillas, bleed the Russians slowly over time. I am convinced that their massive supplies of drones are the only thing that has kept them in the war this long.
