Most don't, they pay far more through overpriced multi-year contracts. It's sad, as a laptop would be far more useful and with less surveillance and more hackability.

I paid $230 for a "good" Samsung Galaxy phone. It was significantly faster than my last (also a Samsung bought six years prior), better resolution, better everything. I see NO reason to pay more than that for a phone. There's just no justification.

True enough. It really doesn't make sense when faced with an $1800 bill upfront. I think most of the people get into them because they are subsidized (at a pretty high interest loan, if one was to compute it) over a multi-year contract.

Those contracts are typically 0-interest loans now. That's not where they make their money. They make you have an expensive plan to use expensive phone, is where they make their money.

One takeaway being: Bringing your own device to that carrier doesn't help.

Under $200 for my moto g power. Battery lasts up to 10 days on standby. Notifications and such can reduce that a lot.

The easiest way to do that is buy a Google phone. The coolest way to do it is get a privacy phone hardware like pinephone or purism.
