I heard a Latin Mass once in 1980 at the Renaissance Faire in Southern California. That's when there were only two, southern Faire, a spring festival, and northern faire, a harvest festival, both operated by the same organization, years before the proliferation of lame faires.
I used to participate because there were people I would never have met otherwise. One of them was Ernie, the Episcopalian priest, who on the Saturday before Easter celebrated an outdoor mass in Latin at about 9PM. I had never heard the liturgy before, but I was taken by the drama and gravitas. My friend went up to partake of the host, but not being a Catholic, I chose to remain seated. It still remains one of my favorite memories of that period.
