It's even gayer than that.

Manawa wera haka celebrates that a Maori war chief of the Ngati Toa tribe, chief Te Rauparaha escaped death by playing possum amongst his dead soldiers, all after getting his ass handed to him by Anglo-Saxon Master Race lads.

Now through pop culture and word-jewing, the death dance is seen as a "war dance" of the Maori tribe's pride, strength and unity, a challenge to other tribes (White men).

Years ago I was hitch hiking around rural NZ and got picked up by a local (white) cop. He was a decent, no-nonsense sort of guy and we got to yakking away about our lives. At one point I asked him if the Maoris were arrested more often than whites. He got a stern look on his face and then politely but firmly upbraided me for asking such a racist question.

I looked it up later and yes, they are. It was then that I understood that NZ was fucked. And this was well before that horse faced mad cow Jacinda Ardern was on the scene.
