That's not a new concept. There were actually in the marketplace during the 50s and 60s but lost popularity, probably because one couldn't do it without actually having to look at it.

Yep. The 1960s Dodge Dart had a push button transmission.

And these days most cars have shift by wire anyway. The lever you move doesn’t actually adjust the transmission valves - it just sets a switch and then motors inside the transmission do the “shifting”.

Of course there are still a few manual transmissions - if you can find them.
