I just watched a Blue Heron hunt and eat a gopher.

submitted by Nosferatjew to whatever 4 monthsJan 3, 2024 15:20:25 ago (+19/-0)     (whatever)

He basically just stands around in the pasture, almost motionless, until he sees a critter, and then snatches it up with the speed and accuracy of a viper. Pretty cool bird. One of my local favorites.

What should I name him?

Pretty badass, huh?

Mrs. Fascinus and I used to watch a Blue Heron who would often hunt for Gophers in the yard when we lived in northern CA.

I used to wonder how he knew where to find them until I saw a view of a field traversed by Gopher holes from an airplane. They're easy to spot from above.

I suspect he has rather powerful senses of hearing, sight, and smell.

He's a Crane, obviously Frasier or Niles...

[ - ] Nosferatjew [op] 2 points 4 monthsJan 3, 2024 15:23:54 ago (+2/-0)

Odd name. What's it mean?

[ - ] SumerBreeze 3 points 4 monthsJan 3, 2024 15:30:40 ago (+3/-0)

Scientific name for heron family is Ardeidae (pronounced ärˈdēəˌdē)

[ - ] Nosferatjew [op] 2 points 4 monthsJan 3, 2024 15:36:27 ago (+2/-0)

är'dēə,dē

How tf am I supposed to pronounce this gibberish?

[ - ] SumerBreeze 1 point 4 monthsJan 3, 2024 15:48:35 ago (+1/-0)

Are dee eh dee

Long lines over the letter gives it a “hard” vowel sound (as in A E I O U). The rest you can figure out in the first page of any dictionary.

I imagine they sound like how a pterodactyl would sound.

[ - ] lord_nougat 0 points 4 monthsJan 3, 2024 17:15:02 ago (+0/-0)

They probably also taste similar to pterodactyls.

[ - ] Thatguy 1 point 4 monthsJan 3, 2024 17:20:10 ago (+1/-0)

No they don’t. They taste a bit gamey.

(Before you respond with anger and curse my cursable ancestors, I was just poking you with a big stick. Sticks are important.)

[ - ] lord_nougat 1 point 4 monthsJan 3, 2024 17:32:44 ago (+1/-0)

Lol, like I care.
For something "endangered", there sure do seem to be fucktonnes of them around!

[ - ] Nosferatjew [op] 0 points 4 monthsJan 3, 2024 17:29:32 ago (+0/-0)

My dog agrees, sticks are important.

[ - ] Thatguy 1 point 4 monthsJan 3, 2024 17:38:15 ago (+1/-0)

I’ll take it a step further, my youngest son used to bring sticks home. My wife wanted me to throw them all away. Being the guy that I am, I said, these sticks are important to him. Let’s pile them up. We did, she was mad about it, but women, pssh! He grew up normal, and thinks I’m the greatest man on the planet. I can die now knowing I brought joy to one life. She still loves me to this day and what I did for my son,

I fed bacon strips for a few years to an egret. He would follow me around my yard hoping for more. Spoiled bastard prefered the more expensive maple flavored bacon. I named him Precious. Finally a second egrest started showing up, doubling my bacon costs. I name him Few. My wife aasked why these nmaes. It's just my autism I guess.

The herons at my old house really liked frogs. It was sweet seeing them in the creek most days.

[ - ] Belfuro 0 points 4 monthsJan 3, 2024 20:16:31 ago (+0/-0)

Cookbook I read as a troubled pre teen was called a solitary blue.

Named after the blue Heron featured in the book.

Ta for the memory.

"HTML", the gopher killer.

[ - ] Zyklonbeekeeper 0 points 4 monthsJan 3, 2024 16:21:21 ago (+0/-0)

Is it a heron or a crane?...I've seen "sandhill cranes" snatch up rodents...I've got blue herons in my marsh but they're snagging minnows and frogs and the odd garter snake...
