Who's eating black-eyed peas (black-eyed beans) tonight?

I did when I was a child when I stayed with my grandmother. She said it was good luck for the following year. Does anyone else do this?

I was always told sauerkraut was for good luck.

I'm going with this, since I have it. I put a couple sliced jalapenos in each quart jar, so fairly spicy.

Interesting, I'd never heard of that. That seems like it would be a German custom. My paternal grandmother was from the South and the Southwest of Scottish and English ancestry. From her, my dad picked up some of her pronunciation of some words, including "warsher" or "worsher" for "washer". I saw it in my head as "warsher" until someone teased me about it, making me feel like a hick.

Maybe it's from all the Germans that settled in Pennsylvania. I was at the grocery store today and most of the people checking out had pork and sauerkraut.

That's very likely that it derives from there. That's great, I always loved sauerkraut. It reminds me that I should buy more. I'm trying to reduce my calorie intake by eating more vegetables while them more flavorful, and that would be terrific with some of the meals I enjoy.

Will canned black-eyed peas work?

Absolutely. I don't think I could make black-eyed peas from scratch unless I had several days to practice. I've never cooked beans or peas before. Besides, I think we all need as much luck as we can get.

Nice. Good to see some customs are still practiced.

From what region of El Salvador does this custom come?

It's a US Southern tradition.
