Turns out that Truman's own chief of staff was working directly for Joseph Stalin, so, you know, no fucking wonder...

The Russian and British spy apparatuses were also widespread in America. From an intelligence perspective, Britain was treating America like a colonial master.

It all goes on to this very day. The "Five Eyes" nations (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States) all spy on each other constantly and share information.

So they can keep claiming that they don't spy on their own citizens, while hiding the fact that it's just the added step of having an ally do the spying and tell you what they learned, and you do the same for them.

The communists were real. I think some people got unfairly pulled in. At some point it was fashionable to be a communist. That's dumb but not criminal. Even running a party that promotes socialist means of production is at least democratic, with democracy being one American value but not the only one.

The references in the article include these two books:

Venona: Decoding Soviet Espionage in America (2000), John Earl Haynes and Harvey Klehr

M. Stanton Evans, Blacklisted by History (2007): The Untold Story of Senator Joe McCarthy and His Fight against America’s Enemies

I've read both of these and just those two books provide a complete vindication of McCarthy's so-called "witch hunt". Those people he could not name were actual communists, which were made public with the release of the Venona decryptions.
