Most American pursue the myth of home ownership which is no longer really possible.

It's based on the old idea from the pioneers that you could own a piece of land and own a home and provide yourself with your own energy needs and not have to pay anybody anything to live there. This is no longer the case and 90% or 99% of america. And I'm not even talking about paying off your mortgage. You going to be forced to connect to utilities which will always have an ever increase in costs that will exceed your ability to pay and return. You'll have probably HOA restrictions and property taxes. You will never get to that point. And people look at a home as an investment and it is not because you cannot not include the carrying cost of a home which is all those utility costs and insurance costs and not just the mortgage and it's interest in terms of your investment. Your best bet is to live in the smallest thing you can possibly live in and put your money into investments which will grow and give you true independence.

The point is that like US medical care the whole housing idea has become a sales pitch by powerful interests that is unlikely to lead to a better outcome for you in most cases.
