Anyone here have experience with barn cats?

Two years ago we gave my wife’s grandmother's (deceased) cat to my wife’s sister, the fucking thing was pissing me off. Now I have an out of control gopher problem, the cunts are tearing up my lawn year round. I call them “lawn niggers”. It became apparent to me recently that the old cat was keeping them under control.

I highly dislike cats in that they require attention. I hate being meowed at and I won’t have one in the house. When you feed a cat outdoors, other cats come around and piss everywhere, and other rodents come for the food. I am rat and mice free due to bait boxes everywhere.

I am trying to get my hands on a barn cat that can live on its own without my ‘love and affection’, although I get that I’ll have to feed and water it to keep it from leaving. The local pound has all these hoops you have to jump through just to get a fucking cat and I’m not really one to seek help from an office of the local sheriff department.

I want a cat that will hang out and get gophers and stay the fuck away from me.
Any suggestions?

We had cats not sure how many, we’d just see them occasionally. They will typically show up by themselves. They sleep in the barn, they catch what they eat, they drink out of the stock tank. You don’t need to do anything. They take care of themselves.

Why did you give a deceased cat to your wife's sister. That's fucked up man. Just because it was pissing you off?

It must suck to be so angry at the world that a cat meowing sends you into fits.

A city near you has a population of feral cats. You probably know someone who lives in that city. That person can point you at the feral cats(so you don't kidnap someone's pet outdoor cat). Boom done. For instance I could get you a half dozen feral cats in an afternoon. But you don't live near me.

That keeping it caged for a week sounds like a good idea too.

As a fellow cat hater I feel for you. Were it not for cats pissing as a way of marking their territory I might let my wife have one although God knows why she'd want one. She's got a perfectly good dog. I can't imagine you'd have trouble finding someone looking to get rid of a little of cats locally and let it be an outdoor cat. They don't give a shit if you interact with them at all as long as they have food when they want it.

Desexed cats don't "piss everywhere".

They prefer to be called Transcats.

I’m hoping to actually get a feral cat. My understanding is that you have to cage it in its “barn” for a few weeks with food, like you would a house cat when you move, so it won’t run away. The cat has to be feral, you can’t put a pet out in the barn like that. And, I don’t want a ‘pet’ cat, as I would have to have it in the house for the two weeks, and then it would expect to come inside when it wants.

If you get the males neutered before they are 1 year old they don't spray. They do all their business in a litter box. Females need to be spayed or they will go into heat and you will soon have more cats than you can handle.
