I'm raised in the Louisiana swamps. Mom encouraged us to go play in the muck and swim in the dark water bayous. She said tht kids who get exposed to germs young will have strong immune systems andno allergies. Six kids and sure enough, no allergies and strong immune systems, all. But my big city relatives practice sanitation and won't even let the kids sit in the grass. All have allergies. Go figure! Immune systems - use it or lose it.
I can't say for certain because I don't know in this case, but if it's purpose is anything like some other cultures traditions (almost typed, "tarditions", but hey, that would work too, huh) it's to ward off evil spirits.
Rituals like naming the kid something like, "Worthless Turd", for the first two years of it's life, to make the demons think that it's not worth stealing.

Some of the kids are getting hurt from being tossed like that.
Your anecdote doesn't match the experience these children are going through.
