I think its still common to refer to informants/snitches as feds even though they are not actual agents/FTE’s of a government “law enforcement” agency

If they are being payed in any form for information, they are an agent of the feds regardless of what the feds say.
It's pilpul to get you to accept informants as legal, don't fall for it.
