Moral cohesion affects the ability for a group to intelligently deal with problems. If you remove cohesion, the ability to work together is lost. It would be impossible to function as a super organism without a common morality. That is part of the reason long-term attritional warfare seeks to erode the moral fabric of a society and atomize people. Moral fibre is required for a civilization to function and mature.

A lot of "moral" rules are self destructive.

And that is why Christian scripture criticizes the use of the letter of the law at the expense of the spirit of the law.
