Certain birds have a "play dead" instinct. Here, you see it in action. In the wild, the predators might have been distracted by something else that was moving instead of staying still.

Of course it's a bit weird in a fully-artificial environment with domesticated predators. Some of you have had your cat give you a "dead" bird only to have it become fully alive when the cat is out of sight.
