Aw, man. I was hoping for boat anchors.

I'm still a devout CQR man. But I've had really good results from Danforth anchors, as well. Right tool for the right job, I guess.

I was excited to see a video on boat anchors as well. Oh well. Still a decent video.

I too was all excited for some nauticalia.

CQR is better for small yachts in sand. Danforth is better in muddy deep bays. Don't forget to gypsy chain to take tension off the capstan.

I had super good results from a danforth in sand in a super small 'yacht' [if one considers a Cal 20 to be a 'yacht', but it is a boat for pleasure, so it is... and I sailed a LOT in that...]

But I have had no misfortune or dragging with my CQR, yet. Of course, a rocky shore would prove possibly difficult and draggy with either, potentially.

A super capable windlass is important, probably. Which is why I installed one. Also, I apparently lack the incredible hulk strength of the previous owner of my boat, who apparently did fine with a CQR, just hauling 600' of chain and a 35lb anchor up hand over hand... I did learn a new level of respect for the guy when I tried that for the first time.

600 ft of chain is about 180m. Even in adverse conditions laying x7 the chain, that would make the marina like 25m deep to require that much chain in storm season.

Was he mooring off the coast of Puerto Rico or something?

just hauling 600' of chain and a 35lb anchor up hand over hand

Yeah f' that, even the big dog mooring ropes get tiring after a while.

Who the fuck knows, glad I'm not weird. The windlass is a back and shoulders saver.
And that anchor is an amazing beast for me, in the conditions I ave anchored in.

My stern anchor is a donforth, but I have never actually deployed it; it just hangs there, looking cool.

But there was that one time when some giant motorboat fart anchored all super close to us in a super pretty cove, where I discovered our transoms super close to one another in the morning, after we swung around. But they were cool, and did leave just enough room. But that was almost scary.

As an engineer this is straight up porn for me.

Like a lot of goats, I was expecting to see boat anchors.
Unlike those other goats, I figured the last one would be a 500 lbs sheboon! Hahaha.

Pretty cool I've used most of these. Interesting to see the other side and how it actually works.

I didn't know some of them collapsed so much on the interior wall... I'd still rather find a stud.

Pretty sure it's the breaks that failed on that...

Missing the most common one, a screw straight into drywall.

[ - ] Rebooted 1 point 5 monthsNov 22, 2023 09:32:38 ago (+1/-0)

The trick is to start with a small diameter screw. When it eventually pulls out you can reuse the hole by installing a larger diameter screw.

Project Farm has a You Tube transcription of this test he did. (Highly recommend project farm on you tube if you've never heard of it.) He likes the EZ Anchr Toggle lock even though it's not the strongest.

OP is missing the best one, the Ramset Super Wallmate 20kg+ bearing e/ never had one fail in gyprock.

I've been undertightening, apparently.

[ - ] Rebooted 1 point 5 monthsNov 22, 2023 09:31:11 ago (+1/-0)

Me too. Although, it is easy to accidentally strip anchors out of the wall when tightening so I've avoided torquing them down.
