is there some new wave of tree-eating beetles ive not heard of?

submitted by the_old_ones to Nature 5 monthsNov 20, 2023 01:24:36 ago (+3/-0)     (Nature)

im hearing weird insect-like noises from our firewood, and im worried some tree-eating beetles got inside some of them (since this area has them). any of them that make weird noises get tossed in the cleansing fire near-immediately just in case.

If you live in the southeast its gonna be termites

Heres how to get rid of them. Start saving up all that cardboard. When you have at least 2 weeks worth, soak a piece of cardboard and lay outside by the wood pile. The next day theyll swarm the cardboard. kill using your imagination. [eg, use gasonline and light the (now dry) board on fire.] repeat until you stop finding them on your wet cardboard bait. Might take a couple weeks or longer to bait them all.

After termites are gone
dry out your firewood. Tarp them better this season to prevent water soaked wood , which is how they found you in the first place.

Termites are in every state but alaska. I only mentioned southeast because highest probablity.

They make rattling and vibrations. Workers also make clicking and rustling sounds with their mouths as they tunnel through wood.

if any doubt try the cardboard trick. When you lift the soggy cardboard theyll be under it.

We've got tree-eating beetles up here.

You can straight-up hear them eating the wood.

It's a thing, at least in conifer forests.
