I can’t help but shake this feeling

Live remote, saw a black cat cross my path earlier, wife and I felt funny about it

I let my girls range most days but decided to let them with us being out today (I like to keep them in the run when I’m gone)

Pull in the driveway and see a hawk eating one of our best tempered and layers

I feel like I failed something I should protect, it’s my first loss in the flock this year. I’m angry at myself

Also, that cat shit is weird, I never see black cats, and this one crossed the street abruptly in front of us today

Needed to get off my chest

Next season we will do it a bit different

Somehow our whole flock turned our girls, was expecting one rooster

Video is a falcon. Those are smaller. I have big mean rooster and they keep the hawks at bay, but any fighting wouldn't be pretty.

My neighbors own a black cat jumping around whole day, I would be all dead by now, if this superstition would be a thing. :)

*also, I just remembered, I think a black cat has to look you strait into your eyes, while crossing your path. THEN you are in trouble.

It’s bizarre, I have game cams and it’s as if the times lines up in a weird way

I had a good workout but this feeling still kind of haunts me. I’m sober now but wish I could escape the feeling for a minute

All I can say is you have to cover your run or accept that raptors will cull your flock.
There is no in between.
I have a 40 foot covered run attached to my roost.
I have an additional 40 foot uncovered run for attended foraging.
I also have a mobile tractor for pest control and weed removal - like puncture vine.
Can't leave them unattended without accepting that they exist in a state of nature.
They can and will be killed.

My run is covered, I just let them run free outside of that too often - I feel guilty leaving them in since they’ve eating all vegetation inside it

And the weather was nice today so figured they deserved a good day out

I was wrong and need to do better

Fixed runs don't work. Even the big industrial "cage free" farmers move their shed to give the birds fresh soil.

If you can move your run they don't have to roam.

I lost 3 gals to im assuming coyotes or a fox a few months ago. it sucks man but don't let it get to you too much. circle of life. sorry for your loss. they got my best gal too

I think chickens are great, I remember as a kid in kindergarten, pulling the chicken's beak to stretch the neck out over a bloodied chopping block and my dad or my uncle lopped off the head with an axe, I butchered a fuck of a lot of chickens in my day, nothing shapes character like the butchering of your own food as a kid...chicken kiev is great, and so is broasted chicken but for a quickie fried chicken is good.
