It probably just ate a bunch of squirrels and rodents until he was found. That's part of what they were bred to do, well and hunting foxes but that was with the assistance of people.
It only takes a couple of days for a rotting corpse to start smelling really tastey to a carnivore. Try keeping your dog out of the trash can. It's eating whatever it wants when you aren't looking. Now, imagine you are too dead to tell your dog no, and you smell like aged beef.
