It's a good point. I knew I never could follow orders I didn't agree with, so I never joined up. However, I know a lot of people -- my immediate peers when I was 18 and 22 that joined. At that point, they wanted to kill Osama Bin Laden who they thought did 9/11. Of course even going to Iraq was a major shock, and people pretty quickly started to get disillusioned. That didn't stop one of my buddies from HS dying in Iraq, though.

Pat Tillman did the same thing. Joined up thinking he was going to fight evil, then grew extremely disillusioned after seeing the war and the governments actions were clearly out of step with the narrative they were selling. I knew a guy whose Dad died in 9/11, which wouldn't be interesting if I lived in NYC, but I lived in TX. Anyways. His son joined right up to get one back at Osama Bin Laden, and then I lost track of him. They probably fed him to the grinder in one way or another.

Another peer shot himself after Iraq. Another one drank himself to death. A guy I wasn't particularly close to came back from Iraq in a coffin -- a friend of a friend. A lot got hurt, and some made a career about it. Anyways. i'm fairly pissed.
