Back in the 80s I read an article (haven't been able to track it down on the internet) by a politician that had been in the Peace Corps in the 60s in Africa. In the 80s he took his son that just graduated college to visit the village in Africa, hoping it would inspire his son to do something similar. Some of the older villagers remembered him. When he asked why the school room they built had collapsed and the hand pump well they had dug was not working, the villagers just shrugged and said 'you left'.
