Most use Acts 2:38 as the biblical reasoning.

You're correct, however speaking in tongues is often explained as speaking a genuine language that happens to not be represented among the audience. Sometimes they'll go further and say it's a dead language from long ago.

It's bullshit meant as a sales pitch. Like everlasting life and other shit.

Yeah, could be sleep talking, some people who are "sleepwalkers" can do really all sorts of things in that state, could talk too, in that case maybe repeating some memory of old movie they seen or something.
I've seen that, was woman sleep-walking in a hotel, just asking us where is elevator, but was one of most scary things I've seen, such person looks a bit from some horror movie.

There are many different 'tongues'. There is only one thing they all translate to though. Whatever the tongue what is being said is this..

"I am completely batshit crazy and I should be locked in a padded cell naked. I should be fed like a baby while strapped to a chair and immobilized as to avoid harm I might do to myself or others. You should avoid me like the plague."

I think it's hysteria.

It’s a crock of shit as far as I’ve learned. It’s TV evangelical crap. Send your money, well sent you a plastic Jesus. Act now and we'll include a vial of holy water.

So you deny the Bible?

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 0 points 1.6 yearsNov 9, 2023 10:37:49 ago (+0/-0)

So, you believe everything you read?

[ - ] Huscarl 1 point 1.6 yearsNov 26, 2023 09:00:45 ago (+1/-0)

I believe that the Bible is 100% true. Who is writing something you believe in more? Under what authority are they writing that is higher than God? Your ancestors believed in the Bible.

It's absolute fucking nonsense.

It depends on what we mean by tongues. If all we mean is that the Spiritual gift entails speaking in previously unlearned, but ordinary natural languages (e.g., languages that are foreign to the speaker, yet native to others who are not the speaker), then we might say this is a miraculous - yet intelligible - ability.

What I deny is the speaking of a new "language" that is unintelligible to everyone, like some Assembly of God parishioner who falls to their knees shouting "sha bi deebalabeedoooo wop".

As for the Bible, I would claim that there is a sense in which I can believe the Bible while also believing (i) the Bible is a mixed-genre literature, (ii) Biblical hermeneutics is difficult (you can't simply read the entire thing through with only one interpretative lens because it was written across eons, by different people, who had different purposes), and (iii) the Bible is not infallible.

Here's my take on talking in tongues as illustrated with an experiment.

1. Take Ambien
2. Stay awake for two more hours
3. Try to order a pizza

It will mean one thing to you, entirely another to the pizza man and everyone else will just think it will just be fucking hilarious.

Whatever is said means

Do you want to wake up naked on the railroad tracks on the wrong side of town? Because that's how it's done.

[ - ] boekanier 1 point 1.6 yearsNov 9, 2023 01:00:47 ago (+1/-0)

it has nothing to do with the bible in se. But yeah, sometimes people step outside themselves and start speaking 'in tonguest'

I was brought up in a Christian church that was led by a "prophet". Saw a lot of crazy shit on Sundays. Speaking in tongues is supposed to be your own personal language that only God understands so the devil can't hear your prayers while you worship. Being in a stadium style hall with a couple hundred people yelling out and/or mumbling whatever sounds they've invented is a wild experience.

It’s just the product of a psychotic episode. See the end of DeNiro’s Cape Fear or interviews with Charlie Manson.

Speaking in tongues is what women do when you make them come 30 times.

[ - ] oppressed 0 points 1.6 yearsNov 9, 2023 06:50:18 ago (+0/-0)

you have to be close to God, holy, and filled with the Holy Spirit

It's a grift from what I've heard. I've never been to one of these places personally, but from talking with people who have, it seems to work a few different ways.

1) The speaker and interpreter have worked out beforehand when to do it and what to say.

2) The speaker just kind of does it spontaneously and if nobody says anything, whoever feels like having their own little sermon will interpret it.

3) The speaker does his little babbling thing, and no one will interpret it as a way to be spiteful and rebuke the speaker, depending on how the congregation feels about the person at the time.

It's essentially just this weird social game they play to either shine a good light or shit on someone, and is apparently the center of a lot of drama as interpreters will interpret "incorrectly" sometimes.
