The FDIC which ensures all banking deposits immediately looks for another bank to take over the business of a failing bank and they usually give that bank incentives to take it over because after all they're taking over a negative. In this particular case that's likely what happened. But as we learn from the savings and loan failures in the 90s in the banking failures in the 2008 the banks that take over the Bad assets often then are brought down by the Bad assets themselves and they fail as well.

The real interesting thing about the distribution and quantity of gold is not that people found it shiny and made it a commodity, but the cause of that perpetual shine makes it valuable for so much of the modern technology. If we had gold like copper, we could do so much more technologically.
