2nd Baby Crying a Lot

submitted by PORTforceOne to whatever 6 monthsNov 3, 2023 14:16:06 ago (+20/-0)     (whatever)

Um...

You guys have any remedies? I have a newborn that is crying a tonne, his doctor calls it 'colic' but that is just like saying 'yea he is crying a lot'.

The little dude is absolutely screaming, like he is in pain. It is making my wife cry and feel like a failure.

He is breastfed and we eat extremely healthy, we eat mostly our own food supplemented with neighbours meat.

He is most miserable after eating, we thought he had gas so we burp him a lot but it's so hard because he is crying so much. Guy is 3wks old and can lift his head up for 5 minutes from his stomach because he arches all day everyday crying.

We've tried a couple store bought 'gas drops' which really have done nothing.

Verify baby is getting enough breastmilk. Might be worthwhile trying to pump and have a bottle ready.

Baby is not tongue-tied, correct? Check that's not an issue, otherwise baby cannot latch and suck properly.

May not be a popular option, but could try formula if nothing else is working. Wife was unable to produce enough due to hormonal conditions...we had no choice after our kid was 95F at four days old.

An unfortunate reality of the modern era. We don't live in communities anymore so there's no other nursing mothers to help. Though formula as a supplement is better than all formula.

We all have to make compromises, nor are we all perfect. Still, strive to do your best.

Although wet nurses aren't really a thing anymore (to my knowledge), there are lots of milk banks around the United States.

[ - ] ReturnOfTheGoats 3 points 6 monthsNov 3, 2023 18:08:56 ago (+3/-0)

Goat milk is supposed to a good substitute for formula.

[ - ] PORTforceOne [op] 1 point 6 monthsNov 4, 2023 00:27:31 ago (+1/-0)

Yeah hes getting enough, we have a milk maiden but would use formula as a last resort.

[ - ] NoRefunds 0 points 6 monthsNov 4, 2023 02:55:45 ago (+0/-0)

This is the formula I used for my baby, she did great on it after a year of breast milk. We would use it to either supplement or mix when we ran out of breast milk

[ - ] Unreasonable 9 points 6 monthsNov 3, 2023 14:25:23 ago (+9/-0)

Had this with my first.

Gripe water and gas x. Hold them belly down in the “tiger” hold I think it was called, sort of like holding a kitten. Gentle pats.

Search YouTube for “isochronic tones belly ache” or similar.

Last resort is the Swedish gas relief device that you stick in their behind.

Umm earplugs also don’t make you a bad parent. It’s hard to concentrate with the crying.

I’ve heard a drop of lemon in the milk.

Also try pumping and use a “gas free” bottle. Could be the little one is slurping up too much air.

“Hamburger” that nipple and shove it all the way in to get a proper latch. You should almost feel like you’re gonna suffocate the kid, but the nipple needs to be at the back of the throat and not in the front of the mouth. No slurping the tatas. Should be quiet when feeding.

Lmk.

[ - ] big_fat_dangus 2 points 6 monthsNov 3, 2023 14:37:18 ago (+2/-0)

I was gonna suggest earplugs as well. You will still hear what the kid is trying to communicate, it will just be less jarring and allow you to think straight while he's putting up a fuss.

OP sounds like it's time for a return trip to the pediatrician.

Dr Brown's bottles are the ones we used to help with air.

Tried gripe water and some other thing that makes his small gas bubbles big ones. Trying a probiotic next.

He has a shallow latch but he is drinking enough we confirmed via pumping and bottle feeding.

[ - ] Her0n 1 point 6 monthsNov 4, 2023 01:46:40 ago (+1/-0)

Shallow latches lead to sucking air in most cases, I really hope it's just gas and that you both find a solution for him soon, for all your sakes.

[ - ] Unreasonable 0 points 6 monthsNov 6, 2023 15:57:57 ago (+0/-0)

I forgot a big one.

We did so much “jump for joy”…. So much….

Lay baby on their back. Then knees to chest, bounce “jump!!”, then pull legs straight and bounce, “for joy”

Also yoga ball bouncing, and papoose walks.

Your baby isn’t broken and they do grow out of it.

[ - ] Whatthefuck 8 points 6 monthsNov 3, 2023 16:28:35 ago (+8/-0)

If my wife ate cabbage or broccoli, the babies would get terrible gas pains (I assume it was gas pain). If she didn't eat anything cruciferous, the little babes were just fine. Could be something as simple as that. Keep trying to figure it out, as it's very likely something you can change with diet. Bear in mind some kids will just cry more than others, but you as the parent should be able to tell the difference between pain and just crying. It sounds like pain from what you've described.

[ - ] NoRefunds 3 points 6 monthsNov 3, 2023 20:52:10 ago (+3/-0)

If my wife ate cabbage or broccoli, the babies would get terrible gas pains (I assume it was gas pain).

We had this except it was due to dairy. She stopped eating/drinking anything dairy, and baby stopped crying and stopped being constipated

[ - ] PORTforceOne [op] 2 points 6 monthsNov 4, 2023 00:31:24 ago (+2/-0)

We've been to a few doctors but they all say different shit because they're all idiots.

One doc says 'sure drink and eat whatever you want, even alcohol because there is no proof it gets in the milk'

Next one will say 'try eating just chicken for a month and see if it improves'

Her diet is quite balanced and good, her mother has been cooking standard non gassy meals for the last month, and hes gotten worse over time if anything.

Definitely a pain cry, he is screaming and arching, he isnt a month old and I've watched him roll from his stomach to his back because he is so strong from all the flexing and contracting.

[ - ] Fascinus 4 points 6 monthsNov 3, 2023 16:27:38 ago (+4/-0)

Mrs. Fascinus says:

It could be tongue tie issue, which would mean baby wasn't getting enough food, but the baby would show signs of not gaining enough weight. More likely, it is a food sensitivity that the mom is ingesting and coming through the breast milk and causing GI upset.

I would do an elimination diet for mom and cut out the top known allergens that pass into the milk (Gluten, Soy, Dairy, and Eggs). It may take a few days to a week for it to be out of mom and baby's system for baby to calm down. Once baby is feeling better, mom can add one of those foods back at a time every few weeks or so if she wants. If baby reacts then you know that is the food bothering baby. This is quite a common issue, but most docs just write it off as colic.

[ - ] PORTforceOne [op] 2 points 6 monthsNov 4, 2023 00:32:43 ago (+2/-0)

No tongue tie or lip tie. He has a shitty latch but it isn't preventing him from getting food.

Might try elimination as a last resort.

[ - ] Fascinus 1 point 6 monthsNov 4, 2023 00:36:38 ago (+1/-0)

You may have just hit the nail on the head there.

A baby with a poor latch may swallow a great deal of air while nursing.

[ - ] Her0n 1 point 6 monthsNov 3, 2023 22:23:19 ago (+1/-0)

Both my boys had tongue and lip ties. We didn't do anything for our first, but he needed therapy to learn how to eat better and he has a speech delay because of it. He's gotten so much better since we have been working with him on it.

Our second got the laser as a newborn and he's doing just fine, we had a week or two of exercises that made him cry a little but he's doing amazingly with everything so far.

If we could go back and get the oldest the laser we would.

[ - ] Subarctica 3 points 6 monthsNov 3, 2023 15:17:30 ago (+3/-0)

They make a product called colic calm. It's like pitch black. But helped my youngest. She had stomach pains apparently could be gas could be weird diet. Either way. The black liquid helped. The black is activated charcoal I believe.

[ - ] Her0n 0 points 6 monthsNov 4, 2023 01:49:30 ago (+0/-0)

It is charcoal, helps burst bubbles in the tract, or so I'm told.

[ - ] albatrosv15 2 points 6 monthsNov 3, 2023 17:06:12 ago (+2/-0)

He is most miserable after eating
Maybe he swallows too much air while being fed. Maybe stomach acidity. A lot of these issues will be solved eventually. A lot of recommendations like no dairy for mother and so on.
Oh and maybe walk with him for some time before eating.

[ - ] Artificial_Intelligentile 2 points 6 monthsNov 3, 2023 14:51:28 ago (+2/-0)

walks and talking.

use your lowest of soft dad voices and really walk some miles with him.

baby wants to feel change, maybe.

helped with my nephew.

god bless brother.

"dont worry kid, a strong male is here to protect you" that kinda voice.

[ - ] Rowdybme 1 point 6 monthsNov 3, 2023 20:17:42 ago (+1/-0)

We have had 7 babies. And a few of them were just criers. Let them self soothe. They will be OK. Also try an automatic rocker chair or bouncy seat. You just have to find what makes them stfu. It can be a bottle. A blanket. Pacifier. Or just simply being held.

[ - ] PORTforceOne [op] 1 point 6 monthsNov 4, 2023 00:27:01 ago (+1/-0)

Nothing makes him stfu, we have tried basically every suggestion the internet has to offer hence me asking on a fucked forum like Voat, I get real answers here.

We've left him for an hour crying and he definitely does not cry it out, he just got hoarse and coughed from crying.

[ - ] Rowdybme 0 points 6 monthsNov 4, 2023 04:23:47 ago (+0/-0)

Had a couple like that. Bouncy seat or rocking chair worked the best for them. Check with your pediatrician and see if they are allowed to take small doses of melatonin. Also if its a legit stomach problem try switching to soy formula and or use gas x for babies.

[ - ] Version6 1 point 6 monthsNov 3, 2023 16:57:50 ago (+1/-0)

If you do formula realize there are better options than soy based. Holle goat based and also there are some specifically for gassy babies.

Drugs are for degenerate losers, which he isn't quite yet.

[ - ] KyleIsThisTall 0 points 6 monthsNov 4, 2023 05:45:22 ago (+0/-0)

Give him something to really cry about

[ - ] 1point21jiggawatts 0 points 6 monthsNov 3, 2023 23:34:30 ago (+0/-0)

Gripe water and wife's diet would be where I would start.

[ - ] Her0n 0 points 6 monthsNov 3, 2023 22:28:26 ago (+0/-0)

What's his cry sound like? There's videos on YouTube of a lady explaining the five (iirc) distinct cries babies use to signal what's wrong.

Back arching typically signifies discomfort or pain. Having gas is a condition that'll make a baby arch their back.

Their needs are basic; food, temperature, sensory (clothes might be uncomfortable), sleep, sound levels, light levels.

If one parent gets frustrated it's time for the other parent to try to solve it while the first parent takes a much needed break.

I hope this is helpful, let us know if any of our ideas help you. We're here to help you out, try the fatherhood subverse sometime. We welcome this type of talk there.

[ - ] PORTforceOne [op] 1 point 6 monthsNov 4, 2023 00:41:37 ago (+1/-0)

Like screaming. I've seen the video and it is most like the pain one x2.

https://youtu.be/_AUtYTaYMrE?t=10s

More like this but much more shrill.

Sure thing.

[ - ] Her0n 0 points 6 monthsNov 4, 2023 01:09:05 ago (+0/-0)

Intestinal gas could be a cause, does the baby quiet down when you hold it upright?

[ - ] Special_Prosecutor 0 points 6 monthsNov 3, 2023 21:28:58 ago (+0/-0)

After ensuring he's completely fed and burped, place in a bouncer seat and manually bounce with your foot. Or, take him for a drive in the car.

This is assuming he's truly colic and not crying for lack of food.

[ - ] FluffyBunnySlippers 0 points 6 monthsNov 3, 2023 21:20:22 ago (+0/-0)

Is he gaining weight appropriately? Sometimes they aren’t getting enough.

Best answer is watch him, are there things that seem to cause more discomfort?

[ - ] PORTforceOne [op] 0 points 6 monthsNov 4, 2023 00:42:36 ago (+0/-0)

He is technically slightly overweight

[ - ] NoRefunds 0 points 6 monthsNov 3, 2023 20:54:35 ago (+0/-0)

[ - ] PORTforceOne [op] 0 points 6 monthsNov 4, 2023 00:43:48 ago (+0/-0)

We cannot do these things as he is either asleep or stiff/flexing and screaming.

I'm seeing aloe Vera, catnip, cold water (I advise not using tap), diet could play a role (would she be interested in trying the Whole30?), fennel...

You might also try massaging his gut, and there may be a pressure point on his foot that can help.

[ - ] AnonymousLex 0 points 6 monthsNov 3, 2023 17:18:59 ago (+0/-0)

Listen up champ! My wife is dietitian of over a decade. We had a similar scenario with our second. Try goats milk formula. The kind for over 12 month olds. It won't hurt the baby they just can't market it as such. If I had to guess your child has some type of deviance in a tongue tie. Also if momma is exhausted they also miss out on tons of affection which makes them cry as well. If your wife can pump milk from her breasts it's not her if she can't your child is starving. Make sure they are making weight as well. Main takeaway is goats milk formula and tongue tie. Also, digestive Enzymes crushed up and mixed in with either breast milk or formula

[ - ] PORTforceOne [op] 0 points 6 monthsNov 4, 2023 00:35:35 ago (+0/-0)

The only formula hes had in his life can be found here:

[ - ] MaryXmas 0 points 6 monthsNov 3, 2023 17:15:06 ago (+0/-0)

Garlic oil for ear issues. Also, check his tonsils, see if they look inflamed or anything.

[ - ] letsgetit 0 points 6 monthsNov 3, 2023 16:54:14 ago (+0/-0)

Are they getting proper naps? That's a VERY important thing.

You could try one of those bouncy rubber medicine balls. Bounce up and down on it for a bit.

Long car rides help babies and small children fall asleep.

Electronic swing

Introducing probiotics slowly is an option.

I would be wary about giving him the cocktail of vaccines they prescribe now. It used to be like 7-8 total for kids in the 80s, now it's up to like 75 total (3-7 per shot). Shit is out of control. Compare the difference, it was appalling when I saw it.

[ - ] bosunmoon 0 points 6 monthsNov 3, 2023 16:35:37 ago (+0/-0)

Try running a hair dryer or a vacuum cleaner. It's a weird trick but it worked with my kids.

[ - ] DonaldJTrump 0 points 6 monthsNov 3, 2023 15:57:32 ago (+0/-0)

The absolute sovereign remedy for my kids (and nephews) has been going outside. Not for long, obviously, when it's cold but natural light and air perk can infant right up. I would also often bring my kids to another room so mother can rest and sing them to sleep. Usually, Alan Jackson's hymnal album would help me. The constant, calm, familiar voice helps. Tiger hold all the way.

I'm sorry for this hard time you're going through but most likely there is no answer to "the problem" and it'll go away in a while. You could also try driving when he's a little older. My oldest would fall right asleep when I reached highway speeds when nothing else would work. 3 weeks is a little young for that.

Rocking cradle with white noise in background, set a radio between stations to get the SHHHHHHHHHHHHHH sound.

[ - ] Gowithit 2 points 6 monthsNov 3, 2023 14:31:24 ago (+2/-0)

They have womb sounds now. Works pretty well. Sitting while holding them in the bathtub works great too except youre stuck sitting in a bathtub while they sleep.

[ - ] Anus_Expander 2 points 6 monthsNov 3, 2023 14:35:01 ago (+2/-0)

There are also websites/apps for White noise. I have used a radio between stations for years as a sleep aid, it masks outside traffic noise. Fan/AC also works great.

[ - ] Gowithit 0 points 6 monthsNov 3, 2023 14:40:20 ago (+0/-0)

Putting on sean hannity would put my kid out within 5 or 10 minutes. Happiest day ever when I found out that trick.

We trusted a friends 18 year old daughter to babysit our 6 month old. She did that and almost killed our daughter. She has permanent brain damage and severe vision problems. The 18 year old girl just got out after serving 10 years in prison. Not funny.

The fuck do I care if you're outraged?
You're nobody to me.
Your story is equally likely to be bullshit as it is truthful.
I recognize no rhetorical third rails.
This is the fringe of the clear web, or haven't you noticed?

I really don't care.
I'm 46 and married, eleven years now.
