I remember by around 2000 or so those free AOL CDs were EVERYWHERE. R.I.P. AOL. Reminds me of a more innocent time. Getting rid of AOL was a nightmare, though.
I wasn't around when the web devolved into web 2.0 as any time spent at a computer was engulfed in WoW. When I finally got out, the world had become unfamiliar.
Web 2.0 was peak internet. Flash videos/games galore, unapologetically brutal free speech, many dedicated forums for individual topics, fantastic P2P messanger applications, best time to be a pirate, etc.
On the flip side, there were malignant popups if you used mainstream browsers, toolbar installers were snuck into shareware (I miss true shareware, though), and it was the dawn of pictured emojis.
More divisive were the bubbly, glassy, glossy, colorful UI design cues. I personally loved the style, but it was hotly contested at the time. Beats the sterile, flat, "minimalist" globohomo UI of the modern age, IMO. Hell, even "minimalist" OSs like Linux or FreeBSD even had desktop environments taking those cues; just look at a picture of KDE circa 2004!

I remember a lott of services switched from usernames to emails. Wow went to battle.net account. And youtube became a google account. I believe this was around 2008 when privacy and anonymity went away.
Even today, children refer to private messaging as direct messaging.
Blackcats and OiNK were my jam! Also, there were far better public trackers than just PirateBay. Remember Suprnova? When OiNK and Suprnova fell, what.cd and BT Junkie replaced and far superceded them in their respective roles. RIP to those too, especially to what.cd; damn that was a hard loss.
IRC was king for homebrew hacking and ROMs, and the eDonkey network had its uses, but I found the latter troublesome and unreliable.

Tim: you are talking to your rafting friends online?
Terry: Yeah. It's pretty great. Here you gotta read what these guys are saying about the jews.
Tim:The jews?
Terry: Oh, yeah. You haven't heard? Man, you are not going to believe what these fucking kayaks are really up to.
