It's an endogenous opioid agonist, meaning it triggers your body to produce more endogenous opioids. Many chronic pain patients have abnormally low levels of endogenous opioids, and since the body naturally uses them for normal pain management, there are mechanisms in place so you don't overdose on substances that your body produces naturally.
