This could just come under the heading of troops "fucking around".
If the Russian Defense Ministry is okay with troops wasting a guided anti-tank missile (which, let's face it, aren't cheap, a 9M133 Kornet costs over $26,000 per missile) on infantry moving in the open, instead of just dropping a $600 152mm round, or an even cheaper mortar round on them, it means that they, 1) have a lot of them, and 2) not enough vehicles to shoot them all at, and 3) are not too concerned about their resupply situation.
With a velocity of about 250mps, and a flight time of about 30 seconds, the target infantry in the video would have been aprox. 7,500m away. The basic 9M133 has a max. effective of 5,000m. There is a version of the Kornet, the 9M133F-3, that has a 15lb HE-Frag warhead, with a max. effective range of about 10,000 meters and a velocity of 320mps, which would have put the targets at aprox. 9,600m.
The ability (and willingness) to engage infantry, LOS, at night, at 10km, is no fucking joke. Like a 10,000m HE sniper round. Those poor fuckers never saw it coming. The us.mil and nato would do well to take note. (The only counter to such a system might be a tank mounted active-defense system, Like "Trophy", that can detect the launch and automatically slew the main gun to the launch point, reducing the engagement sequence time and allowing the gunner to engage and destroy/disrupt the guidance system during the missile's flight.)
(It's possible the Russians are just doing some live-fire field product testing/ sales demo for export sales,ie Bahrain, Algeria, Syria. Saudi Arabia and Iran both make their own versions of the Kornet under license.)
you seem to be an expert in this matters. But when you say that those poor fuckers (indeed!) didn't saw it coming, you're wrong. One can clearly see to their reactions that they tried to escape the missile, but alas for them, too late
The launcher was so far away they would never have heard the launch signature and the actual burn time on the rocket motor is only about the first 10 seconds of it's flight. The little light you see for the remainder of it's flight is a tracking flare (also IR) at the base of the missile, like a tracer, so the gunner can see the missile position in relation to his point of aim. (the 9M133 is laser guided, with the seeker homing on an infrared laser spot reflected from the target).
They were walkng in a file, looks to be on a trail, and based on their interval, probably in the dark. People tend to bunch closer in the dark.
The movement you see just before detonation is exactly sort of reflexive action you would expect to see from an individual or group in the moment that a large dark object about 1.1 meter long, 160mm in diameter, and flying at about 320mps (subsonic) suddenly appears in the air, coming right at them out of the dark.
You have about a spit-second. Just enough time to duck your head, hunch your shoulders, think "oh shit", and whoosh bang, that's it.
And now you know why you keep at least 5-10 meters (or more, depending on terrain and/or visibilty) of separation between individuals during dismounted movement. To reduce the odds of them getting everybody with one boom.
The Ukrainian counteroffensive began on 4 June. Kiev has deployed brigades trained by NATO instructors and armed with Western equipment, including Leopard and Challenger tanks. In early October, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Kiev's push had failed, with Ukraine suffering casualties estimated to be in excess of 90,000.
The Russian Defense Ministry has released footage of the Ukrainian infantry being destroyed by an anti-tank missile system near Kleshcheyevka in the Donetsk People's Republic.
The clip shows a projectile hitting the target as enemy infantry move along a forest belt. According to the ministry, the anti-tank missile system of the Yug battlegroup destroyed troopers of the Ukrainian forces' 80th separate airborne assault brigade.
