Easy one tonight with cover band guys, 2hrs at a campground. They put us inside the “reception” hall or whatever. Old wood building with tall roof and low dropped ceiling, acoustics were actually very very good- wood diffuses high frequencies and giant attic traps low frequencies. Certainly one of best sounding shows we’ve had. I actually put bass guitar and snare drum in the PA, usually don’t as club/ pub rooms are too small. Tons of sound-activated lights and three disco balls in center ceiling, was pretty sweet.
Not a nonwhite to be seen, but these campers allowed their kids to run and slide on the hardwood floor.. Pretty obnoxious. Eventually kids got tired and folks were dancing. I don’t care but band guys like when audience dances.
In 1980 I spent most of the year touring with one of the counterfeit Steppenwolf bands that were bleeding the name dry at the time. I was 19, fresh out of high school and playing in a popular local band. Long story short, I got made an offer I couldn't refuse and joined up. It was a wild time and I got to travel much of the country and play some decent size venues, but the whole thing ended badly and on the run from John Kay's lawyers. As it should have. I was lucky to leave the last gig alive and uninjured, but my bass got held hostage for a while. I've been playing in local bands and combos off and on ever since, but never again had the desire to go on the road. It's a hard life.
Fellow gigbro here...at 57, I am pretty much over gigs. Had a great 5 hour jam at my house the other day, that's more my speed nowadays. #justboomerthings
Yo bro, lighting if I remember from poal days? I don’t gig like I used to, only good ones anymore. I played trumpet all my school years, even got the bachelors of music (recording technology degree). Haven’t played in years, should dust off the horn or the lap steel guitar I bought to learn.
I've played a zillion gigs with a gorillion bands. I have only seen a HANDFUL of 'good' dancers. 99.99999%, including hot chicks, are HORRIBLE dancers, shamefully cringe. Even many niggers dance like autists.
I've been playing with some friends for about 17 years. We played every Thursday, in my neighbors basement for about 15 years till he moved out of town. Now we play in his garage, which is about a 20 minute drive. In all those years , we never played out except for my Daughter's grad party from Nursing School. That is, until last July 8, we were invited to open a three day party with bands every night. We did good but the absolute best part for me was seeing my 16 year old Granddaughter in the crowd, smiling from ear to ear. She had never seen us play and never heard me play except all alone Neither my Wife , nor any of my kids and grandkids have ever seen us play except those two parties. Playing on a real stage was so fun, really a gas. I was late and still setting up as the band started playing, dripping with sweat from the heat plus the embarrassment of being late. I had invited my Son in law to jam with us too. That was also a great moment, to be onstage with him, jamming and seeing the Granddaughter smiling. Looking forward to getting invited back next summer. Never played in front of a crowd of more than 2 people. Seeing ~40 people enjoying our stuff was a huge good time !
That's awesome. I use to run around with a lot of the local bands back in the day and I worked at a local venue that had live music seven days a week. Lot of white boy reggae, funk, Florida cracker music, and bluegrass. I play a little myself, but I've never been comfortable in front of crowds. My personal mantra is "what would we do without music?" I believe music is essential to our experience as humans. I gave up on TV, movies, and video games over a decade ago and I spend that time either listening or making music. Awesome that you can make a little scratch making people dance. That's nobel work, right there. Cool post OP. You reminded me of the good old days.
They say music is mathematical, and I believe those that say that. But while I am extremely solid at math, all my bones are anti-music. It just doesn't grok with me.

Ha as I usually describe, your Jenny Jennies, 80’s 90’s pop, pop country. One new tune is Journey Separate Ways, actually awesome with just good lead vocals and lead guitar- no keyboard player.

Small local bar, both nights packed. I play solo usually, though I have a full band gig later this week.
Good tips, good food, met some great people.
We're not dead yet!
