Are there giant old fish? Weird fish? Unknown? How the hell did they get there?

Members of the carp family can survive anywhere.

Jump in and see if they're piranhas

Bluegill/sunfish. Bass/a few varieties. Catfish. That would be the base. and fucking turtles.

Most country guys catch fish from other places and we put them in our ponds. I was at my great uncles over the summer and he has giant ass striper bass swimming around that look like torpedoes. Humongous catfish too. I mean big MF'rs. I have those but smaller. Its shocking to see his. This is generally where those fish come from.

There's several species of freshwater turtles that you're allowed to harvest in Florida and the meat is pretty damn good if cooked properly. The only freshwater fish I trust around here are crappie, bluegill, and catfish. Bass usually have worms, and we don't have trout. We have crawfish too, that's good eating if you can find a good crawfish hole. Bullfrogs is a good meal too, and the big fuckin tadpoles they make are probably the best bait you could ask for.

Big bluegill/sunfish is my fav to eat. They taste so good. I like catfish if its done right. I've eaten turtle several times when I was younger. It was good but I'm just not into it. I can't get into it. If I were starving to death then i would get into it. Trout is fucking disgusting to me. I always give all mine away. I love mudbugs/crawdads. I like frog legs once in a while. and yes, tadpoles make great bait. I love watching my son when we're fishing because he always goes on a little hunt and gets his own bait. He uses tadpoles, bugs or anything else he thinks fish will like. My kids make me fish a lot more than i want to. They got it bad. You know how it is when we were younger and fishing was everything. If they go to the store with us, which isn't very often because they hate it, they head to the fishing section and buy themselves a new spinner or something else.

Birds drop fish they grabbed from other bodies of water on their way to their nest, sometimes in ponds, sometimes in my back yard

We have Osprey that do that. I was at my kids baseball game and a bloody bluegill was dropped near me and flopping. I was like wtf. and those Osprey get fuckin huge!

Continental wave. Same way all the silt, sand, and good soil gets there.

It is not uncommon for fish, frogs & spiders to come down from the sky during rainstorms, the current theory is they are sucked up either by waterspouts at sea or by tornadoes on land, the time I witnessed the phenomenon was after a heavy deluge when there were a great many miniature cane toads - Bufo Marinus - on the ground, which similarly must have come down with the rain.

Flooding allows fish from rivers, and streams to swim over once dry land to get into large-small ponds that are not normally connected to them in normal conditions.

Also, long ago some land owners-farmers also stocked fresh water ponds with fish in areas there are not native to.

State wildlife departments often stock isolated bodies of water as well.

It all just seems so... unlikely?

Ever seen Salmon swim upstream, or other fish swim across roads during floods?

The craziest one I've seen is "The Climbing Perch" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUk8JzGwBHo

Those videos are fucking depressing. For every one fish that obeys its instincts and miraculously finds a new body of water to live and spawn in, there must be thousands of fish that obeyed the exact same instinct that just ended up dying on a dried up patch of dirt because they were going the wrong way.

The Salmon are risking it all for the future of their offspring.

A Fishy 1488!

Is salmon kosher? It is catfish and shellfish that they can't eat, right?

[ - ] KosherHiveKicker 0 points 6 monthsOct 24, 2023 10:17:30 ago (+0/-0)

Yes salmon is "kosher". You hear them rave about bagels and lox(Salmon).

I'm not sure if catfish is forbidden to Jews. I think it is shellfish, and all cloven-hoof mammals.
