look at the gyms closest to you and sign up for 1 week free trial for each of them and then compare prices and then pick one.

also try to negotiate with the gym person. I was able to negotiate a monthly rate with no sign up fee and no lock in period.

I have found carrying big bottles of water somewhat helpful.
But I still love my freeweights the best. Bar AND dumbells. With a decent routine.

... which I need to do a LOT more. I've been lazy or something.
