The real Samurai had no problem committing shameful acts. Study history. They would kill peasants for fun.
There was very little honorable in the personalities of most Samuri. They did institute a code of honor between Samuri just so these shit heads wouldn't end up offending each other over something very small and and up going to war with each other and devolve Japan back into independent warlords.
That's why sepeku was important. If there was a matter of offense it would be better if either the offended or offender just died rather than leave a permenent conflict that could drag in more people, and the offender just makes more sense. Maybe Israel and Gaza should just commit suicide.

We can all dissemble his actions one way or another - but his motivations for doing so were clear in his suicide note, as he believed that the actual act of killing an elected official was 'shameful' and did not want to bring disrespect to his Parents.
Oh sure - basically a bunch of romanticized (usually unemployed) bag men - bit like mafia hit men, only more swords and kimonos than a casino sushi night in vegas.
Weren't the samurai just mercenaries for their feudal lords? And then they eventually realized that by being the warrior class, they actually kind of had a lot of power seeing as they could basically kill whoever they wanted?
Honor culture like that is great for maintaining internal order and peace, but it is horrible for dealing with outside threats. If a bunch of your best warriors kill themselves to maintain a tradition or adhere to a custom, your people are losing those warrior genes from your gene pool. This is what happened to Europe in the World Wars. So many of the strongest and bravest men of Europe died in those wars.
Pretty much is my understanding of their entire history. Bag men - made powerful in their own right - reminds me of Murder INC (but on a entire County/ cultural scale) from early NYC mafioso days.
