Let me put this in a more personal way, on a much smaller scale:

If I were sitting at home and heard a commotion out front, went to my door and saw a group of jews, being pursued by an angry mob, begging for my help and protection?

I would close the door in their faces and go get a beer.

Because nothing quite goes with a south Texas hanging like a cold beer. I might not necessarily join in, but I would watch.
With a great deal of satisfaction, and no small amount of amusement. Probably make a joke about "wind-chimes".

My give-a-damn is long busted, and I just flat have no more fucks to give.
