I've always wondered the same thing and someone said to me once: "because it's [the Mountain] is there". It's just an ego trip imo. It seems there's not even a view because of cloud cover and smaller, safer mountains have magnificent views too but ego-trippers need to climb Mt Everest so they can go on Social Media and brag!

Mountain climbing was very popular before social media. It's about the accomplishment and the adventure. Yea there's no hedonistic pleasures at any one moment but it's about the gratitude one gets from pioneering. Knowing you got the highest place and it fulfills man's need to pioneer and explore.
