When someone demands you answer a question, first demand they tell you why they're asking.
If they're old or left leaning - ask them what reasons they're are to believe that? Because they already have a formed opinion based upon television.
Ask them what kind of evidence would make them form an opinion that it is not a false flag and that it is a false flag.
If they cannot tell you what kinds of evidence would make them believe it was a false flag then they are just ambushing you, and demanding you agree with their emotionally based opinion. If that's the case then and you want to talk to them, then just either don't discuss it or lie to them.
You can make with emotional arguments if they have nonsensical thinking - but then it's just arguing nonsense. Sometimes it helps anyhow - just say - you seem to feel very strongly about the topic.
Due to brain neural nets, you can pick out features of a story, classify it as a false flag, be correct and have no conscious supporting evidence. So you may think it is a false flag and not know with absolute evidence based certainty. Also be cautious of thought-leadership collaborative-evidence efforts. To fool people they figure groups presenting common evidence persuades people Asch experiment style.
What happened in Australia? An unfalsifiable New Zealand shooting-appeal to emotion, an Australian gun grab, forced shots, concentration camps.
Ask if he believes a false flag is possible and ever happened in history? What is the origin of the term?
Ask them when in history has it been a good idea to concentrate all guns and weapons in the hands of a central government? What has happened in the past when that has occurred? How did they disarm the population previously? Where are citizens most safe?
A lot of people are stupid. Dogs are stupid too, yet we like dogs. So just because people are crazy and stupid doesn't mean they don't have any good qualities.
Challenge him. You both get a day to prove that it happened or not with photographic evidence. He will have nothing, you will have several hundred pieces of evidence.
If you are polite, respectful, and ask challenging questions, it may even bring you closer together. (probably not, but wth)
The other option is to decide if you value your relationship, and both agree not to discuss it any further.
