As a former tank gunner I know that if you can be seen you can be killed. If you can see them, they can see you. I got really good at hiding my tank. A deep hole with my tank parked in hull defilade just the barrel and my sights peaking out of my hole. One shot and I’m out. I usually had two or three other holes dug. Shoot and scoot. Drones are changing the whole battlefield. I don’t know how to deal with that scourge.

As somebody who has never been in a tank, I can tell you that there is absolutely no way to avoid drones. They can come look for you, and your infantry might have some luck shooting it out of the sky, but the drone operators will now know where to find you and where the flak is. And drones are _really_ cheap, enough to swarm a tank.

The only place I feel more-or-less safe is in a thick forest. Drones ain't flying in that shit and with enough foliage they can't see you either.

It’s damn scary. The drones themselves are weapons of attack. They easily take out the Bradley’s and other AFVs. Leopards who are supposedly the best in the world are also being destroyed by drones. How will a fully buttoned up M1 abrams survive? No wonder the US is reluctant to give them to the Ukraine, leopards and Challengers are being destroyed left and right. Each tank killed is four men, dead. I’m crying inside just thinking about it.

Only thing I can imagine that would stop it is a tank mounted phalanx c-ram (in smaller configuration) if that's even possible.

[ - ] Portmanure 0 points 6 monthsOct 7, 2023 17:40:47 ago (+0/-0)

No, thicker armor. Read Keith Laumers Bolo series. Thicker armor is the only way.

Thicket lighter

As Portmanure said

Shoot and scoot

With heavy ass armor you're not scootin

Russia has some small gun prototypes that are magnetically affixed to the top of their tanks. To take out anything moving in a radius around the tank in the air. This is a new development. I can only imagine the number of birds that have died due to both sides having to kill everything that moves.

And there's cages being placed around all IFVs and Tanks in the Ukraine front. It's much more prominent now than a couple years ago.

Only thing I can think of is an externally mounted EMP weapon of some sort. The Abrams will have to be EM hardened of course.

[ - ] Portmanure 0 points 6 monthsOct 7, 2023 20:04:36 ago (+0/-0)

A localized and directed emp weapon would be awesome! But as far as I know an emp can only be generated by a large nuclear weapon.

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 0 points 6 monthsOct 7, 2023 22:50:50 ago (+0/-0)

There are devices that can make EMP blasts. I've seen them used to test cars.

[ - ] Portmanure 0 points 6 monthsOct 7, 2023 22:55:38 ago (+0/-0)

I think you’re wrong, law enforcement would use them all the time if they worked.

It's better to kick in doors while people are sleeping than fight an army battle

There is an nato video from a drone zipping through a forest like the obstacles are nothing.

There are true maestro operators out there now

All I can think of is AI hooked up to multiple sensors that connects to a specialized anti drone system.

[ - ] dassar 1 point 6 monthsOct 7, 2023 15:59:04 ago (+1/-0)

So you just dig holes all over the battle field to hide your tank in ?:?. What happens if you need to go somewhere else where you have no holes?.

[ - ] Portmanure 1 point 6 monthsOct 7, 2023 16:01:25 ago (+1/-0)*

We drove really fast at night. We spent our days tightening track blocks just for this event. Having to go somewhere else was common. I could hide a tank real fast. Even if it was just local brush to hide the profile. Also every company has at least one tank with a bulldozer blade attached. For digging holes..

Hyper sensitive passive radar/microwave detectors, whatever the drones are using, and short range flak guns in place of typical anti-infantry guns. It has to be extremely sensitive as you aren't detecting the signals back and forth between the drones due to the very real possibility that they will be small angle directed communications, and are instead detecting signals that bounce off of the craft.
Lasers aren't an option due to the heavy redesigns tanks would need and the small amount of time they would have to burn the drones out of the sky.

Of course sensitive active radar needs to be running once a passive signal is picked up so the drones exact location can be pinpointed.

Also flak guns can be used for anti-infantry, it may not kill as many infantry, but they won't stick around when the air around them is exploding.

[ - ] Portmanure 0 points 6 monthsOct 7, 2023 17:07:04 ago (+0/-0)

I was just thinking thicker armor.

[ - ] s23erdctfvyg 0 points 6 monthsOct 7, 2023 19:14:28 ago (+0/-0)

Thicker armor slows down the tank, and results in it getting stuck in mud, valleys, or ditches more often. As well as getting overrun due to it being slower.
It is also largely invalidated by heat and rarely hesh.

To rely on armor, you would basically have to have an out layer of hardened alloy steel, an air gap, and then angled uranium alloy armor beneath. This would spread out the molten metal being shot through the armor across the entirety of the interior UA armor. On top of all of this, the tank would have to be armored from the top as much as it's armored from the front.
This would require a complete overhaul of all tanks in militaries across the planet. It's not viable unless militaries decide land cruisers are a good idea.

[ - ] Belfuro 0 points 6 monthsOct 7, 2023 18:16:19 ago (+0/-0)

Can't hide from drones.

Warfare has changed.

There is no hiding and armor no longer exists.

Everything moving towards the front is both visible and capable of being destroyed.

Indirect fire is king

This is why natos attack failed

[ - ] Clubberlang 0 points 6 monthsOct 7, 2023 19:56:42 ago (+0/-0)

One shot and I’m out

👍

Drones

RPGs? but I'm pretty sure their hard to detect before they attack.

[ - ] Portmanure 0 points 6 monthsOct 7, 2023 20:02:03 ago (+0/-0)

I was trained to fire one round. I never missed. Not bragging. But you fire that main gun and raises a huge dust cloud. You gotta move, now! Your exhaust cloud will mix in with the dust. Move to your next hidey hole. Scary shit. Once that bang goes off everyone is yelling and screaming. Move move move! I see it in the drone videos. I know what those crews are experiencing, when one blows up my heart breaks.

It's David and Goliath all over again, except this time the jews are in their armored goliath and the drone is the sling.

Anybody serious about their tough talk on the internet should become very familiar with drones
