I wanted to blow shit up so I became a tank gunner, 19E was my MOS. I went on to greater things but I sure had fun! I also still subscribe to “kill a commie for mommie!” We snapped to attention and yelled “kill Russians, kill kill kill!” Good times!
Grew up in a small (1K pop) farming town in N.Cal. watching John Wayne movies. 3 older brothers Marines, 1 older brother Army Ranger. Most of my friends in high school ambition was to get a job driving tractors and harvesters on one of the big corporate farms, or working at a gas station. I joined the Marines on an open contract. Got sent to a shitload of electronic and computer schools. Re-enlisted once for another shitload of computer schools.
I find it hard to believe you re-enlisted in the marines. Their re-enlistment rates are extremely low. You must have been in an excellent career field. You have my respect.
Joined in '69, re-enlisted in 'late 72 while I was in Vietnam, in a very safe Air Force air control center, for a tax-free re-enlistment bonus and another year long computer system school.
Not the army, but I joined the navy decades ago because I realized I had no discipline, no motivation, no idea what I wanted to do, and had no strong male role models. It was a difficult life, but I became a stronger man because of it, which is all I wanted.
Late 70's Florida. At 19 I already knew a guy who was murdered while smuggling. And several who had gone to prison for it. The money was a HUGE temptation. I decided that wasn't going to be me. I joined the Coast Guard in Tampa and made it to the Arctic. After I reenlisted I drove a 82ft patrol boat that had 2000 horse power. And busted smugglers.
That is badass, just the being in the artic alone. But bouncing around in the waves in an 82 foot boat chasing smugglers? That’s what movies are made about!
Grew up watching gi joe and playing army so i always wanted to serve in some way. I wanted to travel so the military seemed great. I started with air force recruiter but they couldn't ship me for a yr and i couldn't pick an mos. So i joined the army 92a and served 4 yrs active dury honorably. Did 2 tours overseas, one was a hardship tour. Served in support of kfor and earned an arcom.

I used to hate you guys until I realized just how hard your job was, signing out a tank is no easy job. You had to watch me go off and have a lot of fun and lie about it when I returned it.
Yea bro we worked like 60 hrs a week not including p.t. that was in the rear, in the field we were pretty much always working 16 hr days and we were always in the field.

Lol, I know it was hard. I’m glad you were there. Knowing you were there made it much easier in the field with our tanks. We knew we could count on you no matter how much we teased you and were assholes about it. We were scared too.
Navy here. My Dad flew in Air Force planes, so I was always into aircraft. Then I discovered that the Navy also flew planes, and they did it off of aircraft carriers, which was even cooler than the Air Force. A game called "BattleHawks 1942" set the hook, and "Top Gun" reeled me in. I feel like I was one of the oddballs that loved Top Gun, but had already had my eyes on naval aviation before I saw the movie. I knew several people who were in the Navy solely because of Top Gun. (and not a single one of them were pilots, RIOs or NFOs.)
So yeah, I joined the Navy because I had a hard on for naval aviation. No homo.
I got to do a couple of bucket list type things, like get launched off an aircraft carrier, but I hated 95% of my time in the Navy and I still consider it to be the biggest letdown of my life.
Great story! When I was flying for my private pilot’s license out of North Island NAS I would fly over the carriers parked there in my little Cessna 152. I would look down and say to myself, no fucking way! I knew the navy wasn’t for me. Besides my dad being an asshole. I joined the army, switching to the USAF made realize just how stupid I was. But I got to blow stuff up and run over things in a tank. So much fun, but dangerous as all hell.

I was smarter/dumber than that. I raised my sons to never ever join the military. Now one is a usaf pilot the other is talking to a recruiter. Dammit! I didn’t serve for 41 years for my boys to join the military.
My tank was modified with Israeli mods they do know how to fight. Not a fan of Jews, they don’t smell good. And I stank in a tank for weeks on end, lol.
I was diagnosed with tinnitus as a disability due to my service. In a crowded room I cannot discern any words. It’s just noise. I’m really good at nodding and smiling. However I have agreed to things I had no idea about, lol. There is only one thing louder than the main gun on a tank. I was privileged to stand next to an SR-71 in full afterburner. That’s the loudest sound I’ve ever heard. Krakatoa has nothing on an SR-71.
I only got to see the SR-71 in flight from a distance, and some static displays, but for me the loudest sound I heard was standing under an EA-6B Prowler at full military power, ready to launch off a carrier. You know how they describe some sounds as "bone-rattling"? Well this was that. I could feel it all through me. I wouldn't doubt for a second that the SR-71 was louder though.
Bone rattling is exactly how I should have described it. It rolled down the runway and was 41 miles away instantly on its way to Beale AFB. It became a dot in the blink of the eye.
I hear just fine but in a crowded room it’s a bit troubling. I don’t need hearing aids yet. But I see it coming. Tanks were bad for my ears. I actually slept next to the tank on the firing line waiting for my turn. But it also could be the 37 years flying jets, lol.
