Legitimate security? Or a conspiracy for glowies to more easily track you?

Your phone number has value, the website collecting it can sell it.

100% pure tracking tool
was never required in the land line age
first they rode the SMS Verifications horse and look at all the hacking that prevented LOL!
ITS ALL LIES, NEVER BELIEVE ANYONE SELLING A PRODUCT.

They also love "constant contact". Consumer is not allowed to forget the service exists.
Consumer is harassed by the services they use. Consumer grows dependent.

I challenge you gentlemen to never reveal your contact numbers to ANY organization unless it has red hair and big tits.
It's harder than you think.
The grocer asks, cashier at starbucks asks, cashier at fucking am/pm asks (I just want fuel lady!)

They all act ASTONISHED when you politely say "no thanks"
Its minnd blowing

They "have" to ask, they are underlings, its a script, SAY NO. No one ever says no!
Test and observe in the world, you will see I speak truth.

Examples:
Q: "do you have a rewards card?"
A: "No, I don't do those"

Q: "do you have a phone number with us"
A: (sternly, still smiling) "No thank you, I'm not interested"

Q: "but the savings...."
A: "No thank you"

Yep, I will fully forgo the advertised saving to not give them my info. It’s $20, but it’s $15 with my number? Nope, here’s my $20. Fuck off.

Some people don't know how to respond. They kind of short circuit. I have a fake number I give out. They don't care, they are trained then prompted by the machine to ask. It's easier to just give out fake info then it is to explain my position to someone that doesn't care.

If you use the same phone number consistently, you are giving them profile data. All it takes is one link in the chain to tie it to your identity, then they got you.

The war waged against us is more important than those inconsequential personal exchanges.
That said, I make it a point not to become aggravated with the register monkey.

If its a really cute girl I might be funny about it and pretend I think she wants my #.

They want to be able to ID you, and target you for a variety of different things.

It could be for their own personal Advertising-Marketing, selling your info to data miners, or to take legal action against you for something you could do on their service-website.

None of which could be good IMHO.

Largely the second, but there is a hint of legitimacy to the first.

It's really security for them. It makes it harder for someone to register 1000 accounts and bot their platform.

It's to avoid you too easily making additional accounts. However, you can change the number on a burner several times a month -- just not infinitely.

If it's 2 factor autentification for accounts you don't want to be hacked, it's legitimate. If they are asking for phone number with no need, it's a scam.

Rent a temporary phone number using buttcoin from textverified.com for these sites, or don't use them.

There's no legitimate need for it. It's for selling your data.

So if you must...

Use public transportation, get a $8 phone in cash and use a prepaid card.

Keep it separate from other devices use a Faraday bag

I give my number to nobody I don't know, other than official shit, and I change my number without telling them. Yet I get shit fuck you trash calls every day.

[ - ] gimpyoldman 1 point 7 monthsOct 7, 2023 10:50:03 ago (+1/-0)

Yes, even stores that ask for your number. They sell their customers lists. Soon you'll get several calls a day about your car warranty about to expire, and numerous charities. When asked I give the non-emergency number for my local sheriffs department.

it’s became fashionable as millennials couldn’t use email.
