Never go hiking anywhere without at least a pistol. Depending on what animals are around, try not to have anything less than 9mm as unlike humans, animals generally don't rationalize being shot and require more brute force to stop them. For most, a .357 magnum is perfect for hiking. If there are larger bears around, don't carry anything less than a .44 magnum. And know how to use the gun. Animals will often not give you a warning.

I live in Marin County - one of the tamest places on the Earth. When I hike here, I still carry a pistol as there are mountain lions and now black bears in the area.

And if you live in a city, remember: You are still in the wilderness and subject to attack by the North American pavement ape.

Always be prepared to defend yourself at a distance.

Grizzlies don't hibernate and are natural born killer...they should have been packing at least a Mossberg 500 with slugs...I know that area somewhat well and the terrain, as beautiful as it is, is ugly with Grizzly...Waterton Lakes area too is dangerous Grizzly country.
